We have been keeping golu for the past 18 years. We love to collect dolls every year. When we started our golu in 2004, after our marriage, we had 2 sets of 5 Steps. We had arround 250 dolls which were given us to by our parents after our marriage.

We then started collecting new dolls every year during the Gollu. Now this year, we have reached 500+ dolls and the count grows.

We wish to continue the tradition and our son has got the same interest as ours.

I have been keeping golu for close to 8 years now. I do not follow any specific theme but arrange the dolls nicely and make the golu colorful. Every time I try to play with the backdrop decorations and the way the dolls are arranged! My family and I enjoy the process. We invite people to golu and offer them tambulam with vettala pakku and sundal!
I also sing an ambal song daily in front of the golu for 9 days..

Most of the dolls have been passed on from my mom and mother-in-law who have been keeping golu for close to 30 years ++.
I started this tradition once my son was born as I wanted him know about our different festivals and the purpose of those.

This time - added dolls are Ashta lakshmi set , Ramar, Sita and Lakshmar set & the wedding sets.

Plan to expand the golu every year! Hope the Goddesses bless us to do so !

This is my first year of golu. I was planning to keep for last 3 years but could not due to pandemic and other reasons. Finally by God’s grace I could do this year. Mine is a very simple one with all Gurus on the first row starting from down, avatars of God Vishnu who took human forms to protect us from evil and to teach lesson for us and finally the goddess Lakshmi who blesses us in many forms for our health, wealth and happiness.

My earliest memory of Golu is spending time with parents and sister in setting up Golu and listening to stories. I was raised in different parts of south india and my husband different parts of north india and now in USA for last 20 years want to share the golu and the stories with my children and friends. My Golu represents the regions of India to the world Tamil Nadu to Kerala to Andhra Pradesh to Karnataka to Uttar Pradesh to Gujrat to Calcutta to Orissa to Mathura to Rajasthan to China to Japan to Europe to USA. It was dolls handed down to me from my great grandmother to gods to stories from Panchatantra to sports to people of the world . It is a representation of culmination and uniqueness of a culture

This year, the theme of my Golu is TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. We have decorated our golu with indoor plants. We also gave plants to all the guests who came for tambulam. Our golu has wooden steps and all dolls are made of clay which is environmentally safe. Spreading awareness about planting trees is an integral part of our golu this year.
