UKWNET - UNSUNG HEROINES ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - NOMINEES

Mrs Alli Murugesan - India

Mrs. Alli Murugesan – Founder, Director of VASANTHAM - A school and residential care for people with special needs, in Mogappair, Chennai, has empowered thousands of people with special needs and their families for over three decades. She is certainly an unsung heroine who has devoted her life exclusively for the welfare and development of children and adults with special needs, and has empowered thousands of individuals with special needs and their families over the last 32 years and still going strong.

Mrs.Murugesan began working at a special school soon after her schooling in Chennai (since 1980). At such tender age, she has witnessed the struggles of families of children with special needs, receiving a diagnosis of disability or additional needs, first hand. The tremendous shock for parents, along with an onset of worry for child and family’s future, their world would turn upside down. Many families were unable to find the support they desperately needed, Mrs Murugesan embarked upon a mission to create a community for children with special needs, she named her project VASANTHAM, meaning “Spring”. Vasantham was established on the 2nd of October 1989 with six children.

From this humble beginning and with continuous support from individual donors, corporates and institutions, VASANTHAM has now grown to the extent of taking 132 children and adults under its wing. VASANTHAM provides residential care support for about 60 of these individuals. Over these 32 years VASANTHAM has empowered thousands of indiviuals with special needs and their families to be as independent as possible.

Today, she is also supported by her daughter Krupa, a qualified speech-language therapist.

This beautiful mother, who has the mind of a queen, heart of a warrior, her courage is her crown and no words to explain her selfless noble service - She truly deserves to be crowned as Unsung heroine. She has ignited something far greater than she could ever imagined and she is so fueled with passion and VASANTHAM is at the heart of everything she does and impact is reaching special families all over Tamil Nadu. She has truly inspired me to become more involved in the community, reach out to those who are not as privileged as ourselves, and share our talents with those around us in order to make a positive change in our community and our world. I am merely one of the many lives that she has influenced throughout her daily life. Its also an opportunity to showcase the noble work she is doing outside India and get as much reach as possible. Many of us who would love to support the great cause and get involved -could accomplish through her.
