THE CONSTANT
---------------------
It has blown hot; it has blown cold.
Stars innumerable
Have watched this stream giggle
And bare her long physique untold. 1
Slender daughters of plantains green
Have replaced their mothers.
Roses among others
Have blown and withered too
unseen. 2
The elements play hide-and-seek,
As this gigantic ball,
Without a trifle fall,
Revolves fierce and smooth but not
bleak. 3
In the unlit pit of my heart
I still see those flashes,
Amid the grey ashes,
Of your face as a work of art. 4
A sprightful sprout, a frisky bud,
An upright blithesome bloom
Amid this misty gloom,
A lofty blossom above the mud. 5
Although a tempest's blowing here,
Not a pest of Nature's,
But of some cruel creatures,
My world within has naught to fear. 6
The wicked waves of wails and woes,
However long they sway,
Shall be driven sway,
As by hawks a murder of crows. 7
Drugs will be born to needs and
brains;
But my heart is the bowl
That nourishes my soul
With the nectar your smile contains. 8
The wheel of Time no one can hold;
But pictures of the past
To lovers' hearts stick fast.
A heart is a heart, young or old!
