I have been keeping Golu for the last 5 years. Every Year I try to create a new look, feel and ambience to my Gollu. My focus really is on the backdrop of the Gollu setting and the decorations around the Gollu Paddi. This is where I try to show my creativity every year.
This year I added 2 new things to my gollu. 1. Sweet shop - All the sweets are homemade using icing sugar. The sweet stand was built using lego pieces. 2. Flower shop with fresh flowers.
Backdrop: The stonewall is covered in Green paper as a background. The flower thoranams are all handmade by me. The flowers are mostly grown from my garden. The crysthamemum flowers are of 13 colours and I grown them in my garden for Gollu specially. On the Sides, I have used garden trallies ( plant support) , painted them and screwed small hooks to hang the bells and flowers on both sides of the walls. I used palm tree leaves to do the green leaf thoranam to replace thalampoo or Thenai Ollai Thoranam that we put in India.
I have used Real banana leaf plants on the sides, big lamps ( nicely decorated) on the sides. The kolam mat is new and it matches the backdrop and is co-orinated with other colours. The Urali also has fresh flowers from my garden and floating candles. I have kept tussle plant that I grow at home along with Kamakshi Lamp. I have prepared, murukku, thattai, kara sev, coconut burfi, pista burfi and pedas all home made for the gollu. For thambulam, I have made home made/handmade soaps to be given to all the ladies along with the thambulam. These home made soaps have got home ingredients and things from my garden and so they are organic with no artificial colouring or flovouring. I had 125 guest and I had prepared dinner for all my guest. The dinner includes Veg Pilluv, medhu vadai, puliyogirai, cabbage raita, Thair sadam, apple pickle , sundal salad and surakai halwa.
